How Hot is It?

To melt metal alloys, you must provide enough energy to weaken the molecular bonds to the point where the individual molecules are no longer held in a rigid structure, but are able to move almost freely. That means a lot of heat. The oldest preserved cast parts, dating back to 3,000 BC, were most certainly produced using a wood fire and the hot gasses that it produces.

Today’s foundries use modern furnaces that can reach temperatures ranging from 1200-3000 degrees F. Rockford Foundries specializes in aluminum, which melt at 1,200 F, and oshalloy (low leaded red brass), which melts at 1830 F. Wood ignites at 400 F and your average home furnace can reach temps of 90 F. To say the building gets warm is an understatement!
